Description
Hebron® was the first Brazilian pharmaceutical industry to research, produce and make available phytomedicines to doctors and to the market.

This was in 1991, almost at the same time when the company was launched. The laboratory emerged from the resoluteness of its founder, Josimar Henrique, of creating an industry to produce pharmaceutical products using raw-materials stemming from our natural resources (the largest biodiversity in the world), and from the scientific and technological potential available at Universities and Research Institutes in Brazil.

This has been his reason of existence in the last 15 years.

Nowadays, when we talk about an Incentive Law to Research, it may look quite simple. But 14 years ago, in a period when the Internet was not known and the Brazilian economy remained closed and inert in time, to imagine a Brazilian laboratory which would think of producing phytomedicines based on national raw-material, and resulting from research work at the Brazilian Universities, with Brazilian researchers, would be the vanguard of national scientific thought.

Almost nobody bet on it. Josimar Henrique kept moving forward with his project, supported by public surveys with doctors he encountered on his way to accomplishment.

Around the years of 1980, of the 20th Century, a new trend in forming researchers resulted in research with the objective of studying the use of plants as an active principle in the future production of phytomedicines. This new trend in Brazil emerged from a movement that was cropping up, especially in Europe (Germany and France as the forefront countries). There was little effort to turn results of research work developed at Brazilian universities into products. The experience of Brazilian professors, who left the country to make graduate studies in Europe and in the United States, was determinant for the rise of the new trend.

Prior to the creation of Hebron®, Josimar Henrique sought to gather the opinion of doctors on laboratories which had in their objectives the production of medicines based on national research. At that time, the Brazilian industry would research very little. There was a prevailing culture among doctors who stated: medicines researched in Brazil, based on plants – or from microorganisms – wouldn’t have much of a chance. But the idea got the attention of doctors and strengthened the intention to create a laboratory following these principles.

Today, Hebron® is the 60th largest in the rank of 500 pharmaceutical laboratories in Brazil. This position was attained as a result of investment in research in areas of Phytotherapy, Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry. In 15 years of existence, the laboratory launched 135 medicine items in, at least, 15 medical fields, standing out Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Cardiology.
