The 78LXX is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator IC with one of the regulator circuits that can deliver 100mA of output current. The internal current limit and thermal overload protection features of the regulation circuit make it essentially immune to overload. When a Zener diode-resistor combination is used inside the chip, the output impedance can be effectively increased while the quiescent current can be reduced.
