About Us

CETA – the Animal Toxins Extraction Center, was established in 1999 after obtaining a license with the Brazilian Institute of the Environment of Renovated Resources (IBAMA) nº 2/35/1999/000545-1 in the category of commercial breeding.

The purpose of CETA is the development of the activity of animal venom extraction within the appropriate standards, to aid specie development. The organisation has also acquired an educational profile due to its involvement in environmental awareness.

Since its inception CETA has been dedicated primarily to the handling of snakes poison, prioritizing the species; rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus), pit viper (Bothrops jararaca), jararacuçu (Bothrops jararacussu), urutu (Bothrops alternatus) and painted jararaca (Bothrops neuwiedi). Plans for future development include breeding of other species such as; frogs, scorpions, spiders and bees.

In addition to the appropriate technical procedures, the entire infrastructure of implantation is directed to the handling of the animals, so that it obeys advanced standards which preserve the active ingredients found in extracted venoms and maintains the balanced health of the animal.

Working in accordance with current legislation and complying with the best techniques and treatments, CETA seeks to achieved quality and excellence in all aspects of the business resulting in high levels of quality management and product guarantee.

In the extraction beyond the necessary techniques to a safe handling, it is searched to preserve the animal health controlling adequate procedures and quantities of extraction acquired to each specie, as well as guaranteeing the preservation of the active principles contained in venoms, using systems of dehydration under vacuum and/or lyophilization.

COMPONENTS WITH MANY THERAPEUTIC APPLICATION ARE EXTRACTED FROM THE ACTION.

All over the world, specially in the US and Europe, researchers work hard on the therapeutic qualities which are found in poison, and which go beyond simple serum production. In Brazil, researches are also going further ahead, although they aren’t as fast as the researchers would like them to be.

At CEVAP - Centro de Estudos de Venenos de Animais Peçonhentos (Poisonous Animals’ Poison Study Center), a department linked to UNESP - Universidade Estadual Paulista - in Botucatu, a biological glue has been developed in order to replace stitches. It is called fibrin glue, made from the crotalus poison. Tests done at the Botucatu’s Clinical Hospital have been demonstrating that the fibrin glue reproduces the coagulation in the human body by forming a kind of protein net, which prevents blood cells to keep flowing out of the body. Together with ox blood, the substance called like-trombine turns into a surgery glue and has been mainly used in dermatology and plastic surgery.

RESEARCHES – The poison of Brazilian snakes, specially Jararaca, is a biological juice that mixes toxins, enzymes and other active substances. All those components act at the coagulation, blood pressure, blood platelets aggregation, and transmission of nervous impulse. They also have analgesic and anti-cancer functions.
