Overview:
Ethylene glycol distearate is an important additive in the cosmetics industry, which can be used as a pearlescent agent, conditioning agent and thickener in shampoos, baths and other detergents. It is synthesized from ethylene glycol esterification with stearate. The traditional synthesis process has a high reaction temperature, generally between (150~210 °C). In order to remove the water produced by the reaction, measures such as nitrogen flux, decompression or azeotropic dehydration are used. Due to the high reaction temperature, the product is seriously carbonized and the color is dark, so additional decolorization process is required. In some studies, p-toluenesulfonic acid and phosphorous acid (molar ratio 1:1) were used as composite catalysts (hereinafter referred to as composite catalysts) for esterification reactions, and the three factors of catalyst dosage, reaction temperature and reaction time were experimentally studied, and a new process for the synthesis of ethylene glycol distearate was given.
