1. Introduction
The aramid yarn has the characteristics of low density, very high tensile modulus, high breaking strength and low breaking elongation; In addition, it also has the performance of high corrosion resistance, non-conductive, and can maintain its inherent properties of stability at higher temperatures which is a superior fiber optic cable strengthening unit material.
There are two forms of application of aramid yarn in communication optical cables: one is directly used as a load-bearing unit by the unique physical and chemical properties and ultra-high strength characteristics of aramid yarn; another is to deep-process the aramid yarn and combine the aramid yarn with the resin to make it to be a aramid reinforced plastic rod (KFRP), which is used in optical cable to improve its application performance.
In order to ensure that the optical fiber in the optical cable is not affected by external forces and environmental factors, various materials are used to protect the optical fiber through various structural designs in the optical cable manufacturing. Among them, steel wires are often used as strength reinforcements, to be the force component of outdoor optical cables in production, transportation and installation, operation. However, in some special occasions, such as high voltage and other strong electric fields, no metal materials can be used to prevent conduction. Aramid yarn has the characteristics of ultra-high strength, elastic modulus, high temperature resistance and light weight, so it is used to replace steel wire as a fiber optic cable strengthening element. Compared with steel wire, the modulus of aramid yarn is 2 to 3 times that of steel wire, its toughness is twice that of steel wire, and its density is only around 1/5 of that of steel wire.
In the manufacture of optical cables, non-metallic central reinforcements are often used, especially indoor optical cables. The non-metal center reinforcement is a composite of glass fiber and resin material. However, to manufacture high-strength non-metal center reinforcements, aramid yarn must be used instead of glass fiber to make aramid reinforced composite material (KFRP).
As the aramid yarn has excellent properties such as ultra-high strength, high modulus, high temperature resistance, acid and alkali resistance, light weight, insulation and impact resistance, it plays an increasingly important role in improving the performance of optical cables in application practices. .
