Description
Phenoxyethanol is an organic compound that is often used in skin care products and can be etherified from ethylene glycol and phenol, commonly found in skin creams and sunscreens.
Phenoxyethanol is a colorless, oily liquid with antimicrobial properties (usually used with quaternary ammonium salts) and is often used as a highly toxic substitute for sodium azide in biological buffer solutions because 2-phenoxyethanol is less toxic and chemically inactive against copper and lead. It often plays the role of a preservative in cosmetics, skin care products, vaccines and medicines.
Phenoxyethanol can be used as a fixative in perfumes, insect repellent, topical disinfectant, solvent of cellulose acetate, dyes, inks, resins, preservatives and other medical uses. It is also used in the aquaculture industry as an anesthetic for fish. It is also listed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the ingredients of several US vaccines. In Japan, the amount of phenoxyethanol used in cosmetics is monitored.
