Brighteners are organic compounds that improve the whiteness of fibers, fabrics, and paper. Also known as optical brighteners or fluorescent brighteners. Textiles often turn yellow due to the presence of color impurities. In the past, chemical bleaching was used for decolorization and the addition of brighteners to the product.
According to the chemical structure, it can be divided into five categories:
(1) Styrene type, used in cotton fiber and some synthetic fibers, papermaking, soap making and other industries, with blue fluorescence;
(2) Coumarins, which have the basic structure of coumarin ketones and are used in materials such as cellulose and polyvinyl chloride plastics, with strong blue fluorescence;
(3) Pyrazolides, which are used in wool, polyamide and acrylic and other fibers, have green fluorescence;
(4) Benzoazide type, used for acrylic acid and other fibers and polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and other plastics, with red fluorescence;
(5) Phthalimide type, used in fibers such as polyester, acrylic and nylon, with blue fluorescence.
Usually classified by use:
(1) Fluorescent brightener for detergent; (2) Optical brightener for textiles; (3) Fluorescent brightener for papermaking; (4) Fluorescent brighteners for plastics and synthetic materials; (5) Fluorescent brighteners for other purposes.
